That's what this segment of the blog is about. Sample Saturday!
So yesterday we went all the way to Sacramento to meet a friend and play at the local shop there. This post is going to be about some of the food and drink I experienced while we went there, and the adventure along the way.
First off, QSP and I both knew that we would have to leave early to get to Sacramento at a comfortable time. So we woke up earlier than usual, and we hit up some local card shops to find missing cards for QSP's deck. While looking around, I noticed that I was tired very quickly, so I asked QSP to get me a drink. Here is what I ended up drinking:
I liked that it was something different, but it would not be my first soda of choice. It surprised me that, as a root beer, it had caffeine (I checked), since most root beers don't. I guess I am not the biggest fan of malt/cream sodas, although I don't think they are bad. The soda tasted a lot like vanilla coke, just with a hint of root beer in it. The worst part of cream sodas, in my opinion, is the long aftertaste they have in your mouth. However, it was good enough for me, as it woke me up! Overall, I'd rate it a 3/5
So after tons and tons of traffic, and going about 10mph on the freeway because of backed up traffic. We finally made it to the shop!
It's called The Mage's Realm in Sacramento, https://www.facebook.com/TheMagesRealm and the owners and workers there were very nice. The community there was very nice as well.
So we had less than an hour until the standard rounds started. To top it off, draft was happening right after! And they were both swiss! So we knew that if we wanted to eat (neither of us had eaten at all and it was already 5pm) we had to do it now.
We looked, and the closest place to get food was a place called Jimboy's Tacos.
However, when we looked outside, we saw that we were on a very very busy street. So instead of taking the car, we walked the (probably a mile in total) to there.
So, I ordered the daily special from there. Here is there daily specials:
Here was something else that I found interesting while waiting for my order:
Another thing I liked, was that they had a small salsa bar:
Anyway, the time it took for my food was about 10 minutes, which isn't too bad. So here is what it looked like when I finally got my food:
So to review the food. Well first, it was actually harder than it looked to eat, because the trays were dis proportioned and would spin. The plastic fork also made it very difficult to cut into the enchilada, since they had no plastic knives around. The beans were actually pretty good, tasted like they were made from scratch instead of most places use canned beans. The salad was pretty standard. Shredded lettuce and tomato, they gave me a packet of ranch but I decided to not use it.
The tortilla that came with it was nice, hot, and fresh. It went well with the beans and rice. However, with the salsa bar, I expected there to be more tortilla chips given.
The rice, on the other hand, was extremely dry. There was sauce poured on it and it was harder to taste, as it was masked by other things. The enchilada was not the greatest either. It was not bad, but it was sadly comparable to a Taco Bell Enchilada. There was hardly anything inside of it, and the sauce that they used tasted very tangy, and did not taste like traditional enchilada sauce that you would normally expect. It did not mesh well together. I hate to say this, but I ended up going to the salsa bar and using the chipotle sauce they had, which made it taste better.
In my opinion, for the quality of food, it was a bit too expensive. As I said, there is better stuff at Taco Bell. Ordering some tortilla chips is about 5 dollars. I saw someone order one taco and they got charged 3 dollars. It is a fast food place, but it tries to give off the sit down restaurant type of feel, which is nice. The staff was also very friendly. Overall I'd give it a 2/5.
Finally, at the end of our journey, it was past midnight. We were both hungry again. So off to try something else new, the munchie menu at Jack in the box!
So this actually wasn't my first time getting the munchie meal. I've had it one time before. But since QSP had never had it, we went to go try it out.
Before I had the grilled cheese stacker (the first item) which is basically a regular burger with a grilled cheese on top of it. I will let QSP comment about it since he just had it last night. Instead, I will comment on the actual meal I had last night. It was the brunch burger (fourth picture) and it was a basic sausage breakfast burger with bacon, a fried egg, and a hash brown inside of it. The burger was actually pretty good, I would say on par with your average breakfast burger. I did like the nice bit the bacon added. The tacos in the munchie meal are very very greasy. They do not have nearly as much stuff as the picture in the advertisement would have them lead you to believe. There is probably about a 1/4 of the actual amount of food inside the tacos. The grease with that leads them to not tasting very good. In fact, the worker put my napkins inside my box, and the grease from the tacos soaked through the taco bags and soaked all over my napkins, making them 100% unusable. The fries were good, but there were hardly any. I would count about 10 or 15 fries. Probably because there wasn't much room in the box.
Overall, I would say the munchie meal is very good, albiet a very calorific meal.
If I were to rate the meal I would rate it the following
Burger: 3/5
Tacos: 1/5
Fries: 4/5
Overall: 3/5
Anyway, that's my food stuffs adventure for this week!
I love the fact that we're reviewing foods on here considering, like you said, it's a big part of magic culture. I agree that Jimboys seemed like an overpriced Taco Bell. I figure the additional cost covers the maintenance of the salsa bar which was pretty good.
ReplyDeleteAgree on everything you said about the munchie meal. I loved the fact that the guy taking our order at the drive thru imitated that he was high (on life?). Funny thing to hear in the middle of the night. The Grilled Cheese stacker was too much for me. The burger part was good but the grilled cheese was unnecessary and just added more mess and goopy cheese sauce all over things. I want to try that brunch burger but probably wouldn't be ordering this munchie meal again. Great value though!
And another shout out to Mage's Realm for being a great shop filled with great employees and players. A place I'd love to come to again if it weren't for that blasted Friday afternoon traffic.
